PE and Sports Funding
We are passionate about raising sporting achievement and improving the health and well-being of all pupils. Our aim is to deliver a high quality P.E. curriculum and to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities linked to this curriculum to enable all pupils to build their confidence and achieve their full potential.
We believe that a rich and varied P.E. curriculum can improve attainment, attendance and behaviour. In addition, we want to inspire a love of sport in order to raise the level of physical activity of our pupils outside of school, to develop the skills and attitudes needed for every child to enable a lifelong participation in physical activity and support long-term habits for a healthy lifestyle.
Our curriculum provides all pupils with the opportunity to learn a variety of key skills. Each year, the pupils are able to build on these skills and apply them to a range of different sporting contexts. We want every pupil to have a positive mind-set and the confidence to participate in any sport or game that is provided for them. Although key learning of movement, strategy, healthy lifestyles and cooperation permeates all of our physical education provision, we also want our pupils to have fun. Pupils at LMPS are encouraged to enjoy the lessons, extra-curricular activities and competitions which they take part in across their time at our school. Through this approach, we can foster healthy exercise habits that are sustainable and empower our pupils for future life.
Our children are taught that teamwork enriches our lives and that working for the team is selfless. We want children to take pride in their team, rely on each other and recognise that everyone, regardless of ability, has a part to play. We also encourage children to foster a high-level of respect for one another and those who they participate against.
At LMPS, we provide opportunities to compete in sport at all ages and through a range of sporting areas. Activities build character and help to embed our Sporting Values which are celebrated across the school. Overall, we aim to inspire, motivate and enable all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically-demanding activities
Our Intent
At Lytchett Matravers Primary School we recognise the importance of PE in our curriculum, and we are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. In PE, our objectives align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:
- Participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities;
- Develop and apply teamwork skills;
- Develop confidence, resilience, determination and drive to achieve their best;
- Compete in a range of competitive events (against themselves and others);
- Organise and lead their own activities, events and games, where appropriate;
- Develop and model the skills of ‘good sportsmanship’, including respect for rules and the ability to win or lose gracefully.
Through PE, teachers will:
- Model a positive attitude to sports and physical activity;
- Encourage active participation and engagement in a range of physical activities;
- Seek and embrace opportunities for their own CPD;
- Plan and lead a range of regular sporting clubs or other physical activities;
- Seek and plan events where children can perform or compete;
- Celebrate children’s success and personal achievements in sports and physical activity.
EYFS: We encourage the physical development of our children in the reception class as an integral part of their work, using Development Matters skills for PE within the national curriculum. We encourage the children to develop confidence and control of the way they move, and the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills.
Key Stage One: Children are taught more skills in isolation to develop key concepts for playing a range of sports. Our PE coach and teachers adopt a multi-skills approach to lessons in order to enhance fundamental movement skills, where they can explore and develop the techniques required.
Key Stage Two: Children will start to work towards mastery of key skills throughout key stage two where they will get to apply the skills previously learnt to specific sports. Over the four years, the children are provided with great opportunity for repetition of key concepts and progressions, where they can explore key skills across a wide variety of sports. The emphasis for children at the end of this milestone is to be secondary PE ready. Children should develop greater spatial awareness in team games and understand tactics and strategies to help them outwit opponents. Individuals should take ownership for leading healthy active lifestyles and understand how to improve in a broad range of sports.
This page will be updated with new resources from outside clubs that they have sent to support Home Learning.

Year 4 Tag Rugby Festival
On Friday 17th March we took a team of Year 4’s to the Rippa Rugby Year 3/4 Tag Rugby Festival. Most of the children in the team have been coming to Tag Rugby club, however, a few came along having never played before. There were 13 schools there, from across Dorset.
The morning session was based on developing skills in a fun and friendly way. The children worked alongside children from other schools and with coaches from local rugby clubs. They worked on their skills of catching, passing, attack, defence and the rules of tag rugby. Our pupils participated fully and really enjoyed the sessions.
After lunch, the schools were divided into two pools for match play. We played six matches and won all six!
Year 5 and 6 Cross Country
On Monday afternoon, children from the Year 5 and Year 6 were able to take part in a cross country event at Canford School. This was the first event we have been able to attend since 2019 and the children were all clearly ready for the challenge as they were bursting with both excitement and nervous energy.
The mainly flat, grass course was around 2km and the children definitely rose to the challenge of a race situation. Macie said "It was really enjoyable, fun and there were lovely views. I would definitely do it again." All the children gave it their very best effort and left no energy unused by the time they crossed the line. We were so proud of the efforts of all the children. Achievements and goals in running are different for everybody and I think everyone felt proud of their race position. Evie-Mae explained, "I was nervous but I was happier once we started. The area where we ran was interesting and fun."
A particular mention, though, goes to Percy who came second for the Year 5 boys, winning a silver medal and the overall score for the Year 6 girls was very close to winning a team medal.
Year 6 County Finals Netball
Wow! What a tough final! We came 7th overall in the county, which is a phenomenal achievement. The team continued to put in 100% effort throughout the whole afternoon; playing a total of 10 games.
Year 5 Football Festival
Well done to the Year 5 boys, who attended a football festival at Ferndown Upper School, where they played against 7 other teams. This was their first ever game as a team, without any training! The perseverance was incredible to see. Well done!
East Dorset Y6 Netball Tournament
After winning all of their matches and winning the tournament overall, they have secured their place at the county Finals; taking place on Wednesday 30th March! Good luck!
Year 2 Multi-skills
We would like to say a massive well done to Emily who attended a multi-skills event, where she joined a team with another school and represented our school with all the values we expect.
Tag-Rugby Tournament @ Christchurch Rugby Club
During the morning, our two teams played five matches, in their pools, showing spirit, scoring great tries and making superb tackles. Lytchett Reds were put through to the Trophy competition and Lytchett Blues took part in the Plate competition. Overall, Lytchett Reds, undefeated for all of their matches, came a fantastic second in a tightly fought competition for the Trophy and were extremely excited as they collected their medals. Lytchett Blues came fourth in the Plate competition, winning six, drawing three and only losing one of their matches.
Yr6 Indoor Athletics
Our Girls and Boys attended a friendly competition with other Poole schools, where our girls came 1st, and our boys came 3rd.
We then attended our East Dorset School Games, where the competition was fierce. We came 7th overall, and we were very proud off all that they achieved.
Extra-Curricular PE
At LMPS, we provide a wide range of sporting fixtures throughout the calendar Year. We are affiliated into PEDSSA (Poole and East Dorset School Sport Association) to provide our Inter School sporting fixtures of which we are in the East Dorset area for all our School Games Qualifiers.
We are very lucky that our staff give up their time to allow us to provide all these sporting opportunities for the children.
Currently we have these members of staff leading clubs:
Year 3/4 Football: Mr Holroyd and Mr Noyce
Year 3/4/5/6 Netball: Mrs Dominey, Mrs Foster and Mr Noyce
Year 5/6 Football: Mr France and Mr Noyce
Year 5/6 Rugby: Mrs Gould and Mr Noyce
Year 5/6 Cross Country: Mrs Markham and Mr Noyce
Year 3 Swimming: Miss West and Mr Noyce
Curriculum
During our Key Stage 2 PE lessons each child has been given a colour team that they represent for the whole school year. The children are placed into one of the following 6 coloured teams: Blue, Red, Black, Green, Yellow and Orange.
At the end of every half term, once all the skills for the sport have been taught, we hold a mini tournament. The results from each class will then be added the other class in that year group to make a whole year group result table, before finally being added to the main whole school results table. This is located on our PE display board and is updated by our Bronze Ambassadors.
After Christmas, Key Stage 1 children will also be placed in to a coloured team for their PE lessons.
At the end of the Year their we present a trophy to the winning coloured team.
Although we play regular tournaments we always make sure that during our PE Lessons the children are continually trying to demonstrate the School Games values, which are listed below:
Passion, Teamwork, Honesty, Determination, Respect and Self Belief.
Check this page out to see the achievements of PE outside of school. Well done to everyone.
If you have an achievement to share, please email to Mrs/Mme Markham office@lmpsdorset.co.uk so we can share it on here.
Welcome to the Bronze Ambassadors for the year. They are a mixture of Year 5 and 6 children who have been trained to support the development of PE within the school. They are really excited to share their visions across the school. As Bronze Ambassadors, they feel it is their duty to share their love for sports and ļ¬tness through encouraging others, supporting all children in all sports and helping the children and staff to run excellent sporting events.
Bronze Ambassadors 2021 - 2023
The children feel it is important to be a role model to others by not only striving for their best in sport but also across the whole curriculum. With this, the children are exemplar with their behaviour, attitudes to learning and to each other!
Their visions are:
- To encourage everyone to participate in physical activity
- To give everyone the opportunity of physical activity for an average of 30 minutes a day
- To provide a wide range of sporting events with a variety of skills and techniques
Project Platinum
We have been working extremely hard to achieve Platinum with our School Games Mark, however, with COVID, this has been on hold. However, we are very excited to have achieved it this year! Check out School Games Mark to see how we have done it.
Bronze Ambassadors wanted to enable all children to engage in beneficial activities to develop their engagement in physical activity on a regular basis, As the new guidelines state that every child should be active for an average of 60 minutes per day, their idea was to run 2 different half termly activities for each year group, with 3 different levels to each of them. Each year group has their colour that they are aiming for; Year 3 is Bronze, Year 4 is Silver, Year 5 is Gold and Year 6 is Platinum. They have the opportunity to practise and develop their skill at least 5 times a week during the days that they do not have PE. This allows learning without limits and offers the chance for all children to be successful. They also wanted to provide opportunities during break times for children to be more active.
Children will be recognised for their achievements during half termly assemblies, where the new skills will also be demonstrated.
**Home Learning Project Platinum Challenge**
To ensure that we are keeping active through these times, we have created weekly challenges for you and your family to complete! They will incorporate different skills for fitness and techniques, using equipment around your own homes.
There will be different levels within each category (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum). What can you achieve? Can you beat other members of you family?
Let the competition begin!
Please send pictures or videos of you completing the activities to osprey@lmpsdorset.co.uk so we can share what you have been doing.

We are delighted to announce that we, Lytchett Matravers Primary School, have achieved the School Games Platinum Mark Award for the 2021/22 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school's engagement in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
To achieve Platinum, we have focused on demonstrating how we have developed and maintained 60 active minutes across our school.
As a school, we want to ensure our children are provided with a wide curriculum of sports, with the opportunity to partake in activities for at least 60 minutes a day. From this, we have started Project Platinum for children to take part in an activity during break and lunchtimes, and challenge themselves. We have created a rota where if a class doesn’t have PE on that day, they have 2 slots during that day to partake in PE activities. From this, we have seen an impact on the increase of participation of sports.
Our Bronze Ambassadors have lead this in the playground, where they have supported in creating the challenges, picking what needs to be completed in each level, setting and leading the sessions during break and lunchtimes, and supporting assemblies when the new activities are launched. As a school, we have seen increased participation in sports, in addition to children developing their skills across a range of sports, which they are able to apply within their PE lessons and competitions. There has also been a decrease in the amount of first aid incidents.
We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven’t previously been active or represented our school and to try and ensure that all our students have a positive experience and want to try out new activities beyond school too in our community. We believe in the power of physical activity and school sport as a school and give opportunities to those young people that need it most either as a participant, leader, official or volunteer. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas linked to the five School Games outcomes, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
A special thanks to:
- Mr Noyce - for all your amazing support! Not just for getting Platinum, but for everything you do in our PE lessons and more!
- Teachers – for supporting us in PE lessons and during playtimes.
- My Bronze Ambassadors for being so incredible in creating and working so hard on Project Platinum.
We are looking forward to reviewing it in September and starting it all again with our current and new Bronze Ambassadors. We look forward to applying once again in 2023!

School Sports Funding
The Government have provided funding for schools since 2013, to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision. ‘Schools are free to determine how best to use the funding to improve the quality and breadth of P.E. and sport provision, so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.’ (Gov.co.uk).
The planned use of the PE and school sport funding at Lytchett Matravers Primary School has been extremely effective in improving and sustaining high quality teaching and learning of PE and sports provision.
As quoted in our most recent Ofsted report; “The school uses the additional government sport funding very effectively. This has resulted in pupils’ increased participation in sport, and has raised staff knowledge, skills and confidence. This in turn has improved achievement overall in physical education.” June 2015.
